Is Your Room Air Conditioner Safe?

Did you know that room air conditioners require special wiring and dedicated circuits? While most of wouldn’t be able to tolerate Philadelphia summers without them, they shouldn’t by installed by anyone without proper knowledge and electrical experience.

If you’ve recently had your home’s electrical system upgraded and made sure to tell the electrician where you going to place air conditioners during the warmer months, you most likely don’t have anything to worry about. However, if your wiring system is old and the circuit wasn’t intended for an AC unit, you could potentially wind up with a problem this summer.

According to Electrical Construction & Maintenance, “The branch circuit conductors for a cord and plug-connected room air conditioner must have an ampacity not less than 125% of the rated-load current [440.32]. If the room air conditioner is the only load on a circuit, the marked rating of the air conditioner can’t exceed 80% of the rating of the circuit OCPD [440.62(B)].
The total rating of a cord- and plug-connected room air conditioner must not exceed 50% of the rating of a branch circuit where lighting outlets, other appliances, or general-use receptacles are also supplied [440.62(C)].“

Not sure if your home’s electrical system can safely support your air conditioners this season? Contact the expert electricians at GEN3 Electric. We’ll come by to make sure you’re not in harm’s way! Call us today at 215-512-4102 to schedule an appointment.

Protect Your Home Against An Electrical System Overload This Summer

The season for relaxing outside and soaking up the sun is finally here, but that also means your home’s electrical system is going to be under some extra stress. Thousands of homeowners in the Philadelphia Metro area will be running their air conditioning systems to stay cool, and when people run their systems simultaneously the electric grid can become overloaded.

To prevent blackouts, brownouts and electrical fires this summer it’s vital to give your system a rest whenever possible. The best thing to do is to use electricity during off peak hours. Most electricity is used during the middle of the day so if you can make arrangements to use yours early in the morning or late at night, you can save money and reduce the risk of an overload.

It’s also wise to cut down on usage times for energy-guzzling appliances like your washing machine and dryer, the dishwasher and the oven along with your A/C system.

If you haven’t already, we strongly encourage having your air conditioning system inspected and tuned-up. Your electrician should also make sure your air conditioner is fit for summer and that all outlets and wiring are safe for operation.

You do your part, we’ll do ours and together we can cut down on home electrical system overloads this summer. Contact GEN3 Electric with any questions or concerns you may have and we’ll be glad to help you out!

How To Get Clean Electricity When The Sun Goes Down

Interested in going “Green”? WindStream Technologies has introduced a hybrid rooftop energy system that combines solar panels and wind turbines to deliver clean energy. Now you can enjoy electricity via your solar panels even after the sun goes down.

The Make Up
This 1.2 kW SolarMill is comprised of three 300W solar panels and three Savonius wind turbines. It measures 10’ wide by 10’ deep by 7’ high, weighs in at 375 pounds and is designed to sit on top of your roof. How much energy can it produce? Under optimal conditions, claims have been made that it can produce up to 135 kWh per month.

What Does It Offer?
If “very high” renewable energy density is something you’d like to incorporate into your lifestyle, this is the system for you! Even after the sun goes down, the SolarMill unit can produce clean electricity. As long as wind speeds are 4.5mph, the unit will produce power.

We love hearing about advancements in “green” energy, especially when it comes to electricity. But for now, when you need electrical service in the Philadelphia Metro area you know you can count on the experts at GEN3 Electric!

Can A Ceiling Fan Lower My Electric Bill?

You may want to become friends with your ceiling fan this season - well at least put it to good use. They can save you a bunch of money on your energy bills because they use less energy than air conditioning systems, and who doesn’t like a few extra dollars in their wallet?

How does it work? A ceiling fan won’t actually cool the room, but it does have a cooling effect. As the blades spin, air circulates throughout the room which mixes warm air trapped near the ceiling with cooler air found near the ground. This cooling effect can be felt on your body as the air blows across your skin, but make sure to turn the fan off when you are not in the room.

As a result, you’ll be able to turn your thermostat up a few degrees in the warmer months which will help you save energy as your cooling system won’t have to work as hard and as frequently. You’ll be much happier when your next energy bill comes in the mail.

At GEN3 Electric, ceiling fan installation is one of our specialties. We cover everything from indoor/outdoor fans to hi-performance and decorative options so give us a call today at 215-512-4102 to schedule an appointment.
