Philly Deep Freeze Causes Increase In Electrical Fires

In the midst of a deep freeze, you may be inclined to crank up the heat or heat your home in creative, unconventional ways. "What happens is when it gets this cold, people start using supplemental heating sources," said Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer. "They use electrical heaters, unconventional means, like a stove or an oven, which they shouldn't, and it causes fires."

While frigid air has made its way into Philly, and doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon, the number of fires in the city has nearly double in the last week. It’s important to take a minute to understand the dangers that can come about by using unconventional means to heat your house:
  • We don’t recommend space heaters, but if you do choose to run one make sure it has enough space. Keep it at least three feet away from anything that can burn or melt.
  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms have batteries and you test them to make sure they will be responsive in case of an emergency.
