Subject: Arc Fault use ; Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) Awareness PSA from ESFI

Name: Geoff Subject: Arc Fault use

Question: 2 questions: 1) Can you refer me to a source to learn how an arc fault interrupting breaker works? 2) From what I've gathered so far it sounds like it is to protect against shorts that spark rather than a slight leaking current? I have done a lot of wiring in my barn. (No animals) Some of the junction boxes fill with debris and I found a mouse in one recently. I assume this would be a good set up for an arc causing short? Should barn circuits have arc fault interrupters? If so, are there main breakers so only one is needed?ThanksGeoff

Answer: Hi Geoff,I just posted a a video about AFCI breakers on to my how to blog. Take a quick look it should be very informative. I live in Philadelphia so I don't know mush about bars. I have wire some old carriage houses in the Queen Village and Chestnut hill. They did not have animals either but I don't think that is what you mean. Currently Arc Fault breaker are only required in bedrooms.
