Cover Plates

When switches sit in the wall before the plate is installed they have about a 1/4 of an inch free movement. This is there to correct for crooked boxes or studs. Even in new construction everything is not square so this adjustment hides these imperfections.

The trick to installing this plate is to line up the four screws before you tighten any of them down. You may need to use a nail or an awl to wiggle the plate and the switches into alignment.

If after it is all done the plate looks crooked you can give it gental tap on the corners of the plate to make it square.
